Reiki is a Japanese term meaning Universal Life Force Energy. Reiki is a holistic energy healing modality that addresses the care of the whole person – mind, body and spirit. This spiritually guided healing technique is used to reduce stress and induce relaxation which supports the body’s innate ability to heal on all levels. Reiki is a complimentary approach to healing used as an adjunct to conventional medical treatments. Reiki does not replace medical treatment, but will enhance the benefits of it.
Although we may not be able to identify exactly when humans began accessing Reiki energy, we do know that a Japanese man, Mikao Usui Sensei, rediscovered the energy in 1922 and created a Reiki practice called the Usui Shiki Ryoho System of Natural Healing. Usui Sensei taught Reiki to Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American woman from Hawaii. Takata is credited with sharing and teaching Reiki in the United States beginning in 1937.

How does it work?
We all have an energy field surrounding our physical body and a life force within. At times, this energy field can become burdened by heavy, dense and negative energy, thus blocking energy pathways. These restrictions can cause one to feel physically, emotionally or mentally un-balanced. During a Reiki treatment, a Reiki practitioner channels the Energy to the recipient by gently placing his/her hands lightly on or above the body. Reiki then flows where it is needed most.
What to expect during a Reiki treatment
A Reiki session typically lasts from 30 minutes to 1 ½ hour. Even mini treatments of only several minutes can alleviate pain or discomfort. One can receive treatments while lying down or sitting in a comfortable chair. Reiki sessions do not require the removal of any clothing, with the exception of shoes. During the treatment, feelings of deep relaxation are usually felt. In addition, a glowing radiance flows through and surrounds the body as the Reiki energy encourages one to let of tension, anxiety, fear and other negative feelings. A state of peace and well-being is experienced. Once the treatment is finished, the person may feel refreshed, positive and balanced.
